What a fun day! Bride Ashleigh looked stunning in her wedding gown and cowboy boots. We had a blast getting ready with her and her girls at her parents house. Her bridesmaids, who had travelled to be with her on this special day from the States, were an amazing help and so supportive of Ashleigh.
It’s so fun to photograph first looks. We get to get the groom all set up in position, and watch as he waits in eager anticipation of his bride walking up behind him. It’s fun to see how they react – usually trying to play it cool, but always very excited, and maybe a little nervous. Brendan (who, by the way, was looking pretty suave in his blue suit and wooden bow tie) was no exception. The look on his face when he saw Ashleigh for the first time was pure gold! I love capturing couples have a private moment together – the real, raw reactions of them just in love with each other – nothing set up or posed, just seeing the love of their life for the first time before they walk down the aisle to become husband and wife.
We hung out at this beautiful treed lane for photos with the bridal party. We had so much fun together – the groomsmen were cracking jokes while the bridesmaids cuddled together in blankets and jean jackets to keep warm on this chilly August day. They all helped Ashleigh + Brendan relax and enjoy their time together before we headed to the ceremony at Apple Creek Golf Course. This was not my first time shooting there and it is a beautiful venue. Unfortunately, due to the cool, drizzly weather, the ceremony was moved inside. While this is never what you hope to have happen, it was a beautiful, quick-and-to-the-point ceremony complete with a bagpiper!
After was family photos, which we were able to take outside, and the cooler weather made for some cute photos of grandma in a suit jacket:) Then it was party time! A delicious meal and beautiful decor in a charming space at Apple Creek Golf Course! I love the exposed beams in the ceiling complete with string lights – so pretty!
One of my favourite things about being involved in a wedding day is getting to hear a little slice of the bride and grooms lives from the family and friends during the speeches. Often they are funny stories from their childhood, or hijinks from the adolescent years – and every so often the speeches get emotional. Brendan’s Mom came up to speak and before she could get through the first sentance, she was overcome with love and tears. Then it was Brendan’s turn to cry and soon the whole room was overcome. It was amazing to see a family that cares for one another as much as they do with such beautiful vulnerability. Their mother-son dance was such a beautiful expression of this love. Guests were given neon light-wands to wave around during the couples first dance, and then kids got to blow bubbles while everyone joined the couple on the dance floor.
We were able to sneak the couple away for a few night shots. While I love sunset photos, the weather doesn’t always cooperate with that plan. Plan B is night photos with some more dramatic lighting which end up being some of my favourites.
It was truly a wonderful day. Thank you Ashleigh and Brendan for letting me a part of your day – it was a blessing and an honour. Much love, Carlin
